Vale Alena Young

12th October, 2017

Vale Alena Young – the generous, dedicated supporter of the Good Friday Appeal who lost a short battle with cancer on October 7.

Alena was the face of the appeal at Pacific Werribee Woolworths, where she had worked for eight years.

“No one got through the registers without buying a raffle ticket of some sort,” colleague Chloe Desira said. “She was selfless in her efforts to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital. Hours after her shifts finished she would still be in the store joking with customers that they couldn’t leave until they had donated.”

After Alena’s cancer diagnosis colleagues held a trivia night to raise money to help her – she immediately donated the $5600 raised to the Good Friday Appeal.

Earlier this year in a particularly personal effort to raise money for the kids Alena sacrificed her long hair – her $10,000 target was exceeded and the amount contributed to the store’s amazing $40,106 donation to the 2017 appeal.

Chloe said children were really dear to Alena and drove her dedication and commitment to causes such as the Good Friday Appeal.

“When she got going she was pretty unstoppable,” Chloe said. “Even when she was really sick she was more concerned about ensuring we would continue to raise money for the kids than about herself.

“She was an amazing lady.”

The Good Friday Appeal applauds Alena’s work in raising money for the Royal Children’s Hospital and offers condolences to her family, colleagues and friends.
